Freetime Suggestions
Alpine Winter Adventure
What to do during your free time? Here are suggetions for you. For more details or current local events talk to your tour director or your local city guide. They are always the best source for freetime activities and offer great tips on restaurants or local 'hang-outs.'
Here are some suggestions:
1. Carolino Augusteum-Volkskundemuseum
Overlooking Hellbrunn Park, the Volkskunde Museum offers a folk collection assembled by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus in 1615. The displays, spread over three floors, reflect a cross-section of local folk art and depict popular religious beliefs, folk medicine, and the traditional costumes of Land Salzburg.
Hours: Daily 9am-5pm
Location: Montasschloesschen, Hellbrunn
Transportation: Bus 25
Phone 0662/620808500
2. Glockenspiel (Carillon)
The celebrated glockenspiel with its 35 bells stands across from the Residenz. You can hear this 18th-century carillon at 7am, 11am, and 6pm. Currently, access to the interior is prohibited. The ideal way to hear the chimes is from one of the cafes lining the edges of the Mozartplatz while sipping your favorite coffee or drink.
Location: Mozartplatz 1
Transportation: Bus 1

3. Hohensalzburg Fortress
The stronghold of the ruling prince-archbishops before they moved "downtown" to the Residenz, this fortress towers 122m (400 ft.) above the Salzach River on a rocky dolomite ledge. The massive fortress crowns the Festungsberg and literally dominates Salzburg. Guided tours are available, purchased with a combined ticket of admission and tour, 7€ ($8.40) for adults and 4.50€ ($5.40) for children. To get here, you can hike up one of the paths or lanes leading to the fortress, or you can walk from Kapitelplatz by way of Festungsgasse or from the Mönchsberg via the Schartentor. You can also take the funicular from Festungsgasse (tel. 0662/842682) at the station behind the cathedral. You can purchase an advance ticket to the museum, including the admission, the funicular ride, and a guided tour for 12€ ($15) for adults and 6.50€ ($7.80) for children. Call the museum or the Festungsgasse telephone number in advance for ticket availability.
Work on Hohensalzburg began in 1077 and was not finished until 1681, during which time many builders of widely different tastes and purposes had a hand in the construction. This is the largest completely preserved castle left in central Europe. Functions of defense and state were combined in this fortress for 6 centuries.
The elegant state apartments, once the dwellings of the prince-archbishops and their courts, are on display. Note the coffered ceilings and intricate ironwork, and check out the early-16th-century porcelain stove in the Golden Room.
The Burgmuseum is distinguished mainly by its collection of medieval art. Plans and prints tracing the growth of Salzburg are on display, as are instruments of torture and many Gothic artifacts. The Salzburger Stier (Salzburg Bull), an open-air barrel organ built in 1502, plays melodies by Mozart and his friend Haydn in daily concerts following the glockenspiel chimes. The Rainermuseum has arms and armor exhibits. The beautiful late-Gothic St. George's Chapel, dating from 1501, has marble reliefs of the Apostles.
Visit Hohensalzburg even if you're not interested in the fortress, just for the view from the terrace. From the Reck watchtower, you get a panoramic sweep of the Alps. The Kuenberg bastion has a fine view of Salzburg's domes and towers.
You can see the fortress grounds on your own or take a tour of the interior. Conducted 40- to 50-minute tours go through the fortress daily, but hours and departure times depend on the season: November to March 10am to 4:30pm. Check for updates rates.
Hours: October - March, daily 9.30am-5pm
Location: Moenchsberg 3
Phone 0662/8424301
4. Spielzeugmuseum
In what used to be the Salzburg City Hospital, this museum is a toy wonderland -- from the toys that kids played with in the 1500s to those that are popular today. The vintage model trains, the early carousels, the old musical instruments, and the large collection of arts and crafts delight children and adults alike.
Hours: Daily 9am-5pm; Punch and Judy shows Tues-Wed at 3pm
Location: Moenchsberg 3
Transportation: Bus 1
Phone 0662/0808300

5. Marionettentheater (puppet theater)
Salzburger Marionetten Theater, Schwarzstrasse 24 (tel.0662/8724060; www.marionetten.at; bus: 3, 5, or 6), presents shows from Easter to September, as well as special shows at Christmas and during Mozart Week, the last week of January. The puppets perform both opera (usually Mozart) and ballet, to the delight of both adults and children. Founded in 1913, the theater continues to be one of the most unusual and enjoyable theatrical experiences in Salzburg. You might forget that marionettes are onstage -- it's that realistic. Tickets are 18€ to 35€ ($23-$46).
6. Concerts
It's said that there's a musical event -- often a Mozart concert -- staged virtually every night in Salzburg. To find out what's playing, visit the Salzburg tourist office, Mozartplatz 5 (tel. 0662/889870), or get a free copy of Offizieller Wochenspiegel, a monthly pamphlet listing all major and many minor local cultural events; it's available in most hotels. The annual Mozart Week is in January.
